Is it just me or every once in a while you see a listing ending at price which is triple or more what you would have expect?

It always makes me wonder if I miss something, some hidden variety or error, or was it just bidding war between uneducated buyers.

List here your unexplained auctions, and let's see if we can figure them out!

I'll start with a 1867 IHC:

He has a large following and gets stupid money on some listings that most educated buyers pass on. That coin is a hole filler and past restoration. nlp

I agree and it's like GreatSouthernCoin whose auctions get way out of control. There's also a general ebay bidding frenzy that happens too often and so we just need to know when to bail out. I have a list of ebay sellers that I monitor and know that they have good coins at BIN reasonable prices.

I'm finding that many Heritage auctions can provide the buyer with better deals. The 'average' ebay buyer is perhaps intimidated by heritage and the winning bids are more in line with realistic prices.

I have purchased several coins from this seller in the past without a problem and at a fair to great price.

I would chalk this particular auction up to 2 bidders who wanted a particular coin no matter the price.

I'm scratching my head over one I just listed. It's just a common 21 Morgan. Yet in the first hour I had 39 views and 5 watchers AND 6 bids. None of my other morgans had even had anyone view the page.....go figure.

Link me up; I'll let you know what I see. In the meantime, pour a glass of wine and sit there, enjoying the action.

if you have posted a Morgan on ebay and didn't have any lookers something must be wrong with your listing. I don't believe I have ever had an auction for a Morgan not get at least 15 views and most of them are closer to the 70-100 range with some going even higher than that. Can you show us a auction of yours and maybe we can give you a few pointers to get you some people at least looking at your auctions

Not just the uneducated and ignorant, who pays $86,000 for a Proof ASE ?

On a side note, I want some of whatever this guy uses to polish his Morgans and Peace dollars with, they practically glow in the dark ........

ebay is a fools paradise if you don't have self-control. If you have the personality type that gets more invested in winning an auction than buying something at a fair price, you should stay away from high dollar items. Back in the early days of ebay, it was common to find some very nice deals. Today, with the 'professional' ebay sellers and the extravagant fees... great deals have to be sifted through a filter. Caveat Emptor!!

Another IHC candidate, same seller.

I'm not sure, but it looks like a slider to me, but even if not, would you grade it as MS65RB?

3 buyers have fought over it.

I guess this is why silver prices on ebay are not dropping much.
Why is this coin $15 over melt ?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1922-S-U-S-...50761956349&
And one like this is only .80cents more.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PEACE-DOLLA...047675.l2557
Why are they spending $33 with shipping on a cull?

Although I cannot see the ebay auction at work, I have a feeling that I may be going "outta control" on a particular coin that I want for my collection...too late (more to follow).

Why do people pay so much "over melt" for coins on ebay?

Well, maybe because people still like to collect coins?

In my case I wasn't opposed to them paying over spot but was confused at why they chose a junk coin for $33 when the exact same coin in AU went for .80 cents more. Not only would it look a lot nicer in a set but it has more silver in it than the worn down cull.

Can anyone explain how this coin:

Crazy-Buyers-Or-Hidden-Gems?-Surprising-Auctions-Thread

Have ended up for 860$?

Is it just me or is it a slider? (even if indeed MS, that MS65 money).
