I received a 1979 Washington quarter in change yesterday and suspect it is fake. It is slightly smaller in diameter and has a rough pitted appearance. The telling detail is the extremely even sandwich appearance of the nickel and copper in the middle and they are not seamlessly combined as in the real deal. It looks like the layers were separate and then pressed together. The center is reeded and the outer layers are not. Does anyone have any info on counterfeits of this date? I am in central North Carolina. I don't have a camera capable of taking detailed photos or I would post it.
I agree that it was definitely exposed to something. There is really no reason to counterfeit this coin as it is simply not worth it. It would cost more to counterfeit it than a real one is worth.

True, but there are some counterfeits of common recent coins. I had a friend who had a 1974 nickel made of lead, and I have a 1978 quarter made of white metal (apparently tin and zinc, the size is right but it is about 2 grams light.)
