Details are very attractive, but it looks to me like it might have been lacquered.

definitely cleaned, however, I can't see any wear on this coin. It may retone nicely. the cleaning is a shame on such a nice coin. Unc Improperly cleaned. If I was forced to grade it without the cleaning...maybe MS63. Great deal at $35 IMO

I'm more certain now, than before, that it's probably lacquered. Drop that puppy into some acetone and see what you get.

Quote: Acetone didn't hurt copper coin? It is possible for acetone to hurt a copper coin, but you have to carefully assemble the right conditions for it to happen - you'll need the presence of water vapor and rather bright light. So, the coin will need to be on a sunlit windowsill on a very humid day, and you'll have to let the acetone evaporate completely. Or, you could just ensure your acetone is pure, the coin remains immersed in it, and it's not in a really bright room. It's harder to do it wrong than it is to do it right. I personally would not hesitate to use acetone with a copper coin. For this one, I think 5 or 10 minutes in acetone will tell you all you need to know. Perhaps more; if this is lacquer it's been there for over 100 years and it might be stubborn.

GREAT details on this large cent. I agree with SsuperDdave; an acetone bath should help tremendously. Research the way to do it. There are MANY threads and posts discussing HOW to do this correctly here on the CCF. Good luck with this beauty and post the after pictures, please!!

LC is after 10min acetone bath and unfortunately only effect are strange bright spots. I send pics later. Coin was inside glass container, immersed in pure acetone. After 10 minutes I poured acetone and I waited until the acetone evaporates from the coin.
