Historically it's been fairly common for professional numismatists to issue their own tokens. Here's one in white metal by Samuel Hamer, co-author of the "bible" for British Provincial Tokens (Conder tokens) with Richard Dalton.

Judging by the all seeing eye and the rose buds, these guys were either Masons or Rosicrucian.

I'm not an excessively greedy man, nor am I given over to lusting after another man's goods & chattels. However if I do ever succumb to medal or token envy, then Mr yarm it will be odds on that it's one of yours.
Another beauty.

I was hoping to coax out a few examples of numismatists' tokens (I'm not the only collector am I? )
Here's one by Charles Pye, engraver and token collector/author.

I don't really collect these, but I think this is what you are looking for. This was given to my grandfather I believe by Grinnell.

I'm intrigued by them, but this is the only one I have. Modern, picked up from the dealer at a show, made as I believe from plated zinc by Jess Patrick out in California.

If I succeed in setting up as a small-scale coiner, I plan on talking this sort of thing up to the coin dealers in my area (we have quite a few).

The Conder Token Collector's Club produced a token for their 10th anniversary which combined designs from two different Conder tokens. It hasn't taken very long for this copper token to begin to tone around the edges.
