Gonna keep an eye on this. Silver and Gold prices have come down significantly over the last couple of years so I'm expecting a lower price than usual.
- New design
- New denomination
- .999 purity in silver and .9999 purity in gold.

Okay, it's pretty dreadful news regarding the prices of the new Britannia coins. Anyone who has paid attention to my posts since I joined this forum will know I'm quite critical of The Royal Mint, insofar as it almost never offers value for money. I'm sorry to say that The Royal Mint has outdone itself again this year. Their products are as overpriced as ever. The 2013 BRITANNIA ONE OUNCE SILVER PROOF COIN contains, at today's prices, £13 ($19) worth of silver. Price: £92.50 ($139). By way of comparison the US Mint offers one ounce Proof Silver Eagles for $58. 2013 BRITANNIA 1/20 OUNCE GOLD PROOF COIN contains, at today's prices, £42 ($62) worth of gold. Price: £100 ($150). By way of comparison the US Mint offers 1/10 ounce Proof Gold Eagles for $180. That's for a tenth of an ounce, not a twentieth. I for one will be steering well clear of these coins. How small is 1/20th if 1/10th is slightly smaller than a dime?

Well.... I mean what choice do you have if you collect world mint gold and silver proofs? None. I mean yes you could skip them but then you have holes in your collection.

It might sound like nitpicking but is The Royal Mint being deliberately vague about the coins in the three and five coin gold proof sets? I'm guessing the three coin set is 1/20, 1/10, and 1/4 ounce respectively. The five coin set adds 1/2 and 1 troy ounce coins as well. Still, if I'm expected to pay a handsome premium for the opportunity to buy the new Britannia coins, The Royal Mint could at least do me the courtesy of providing at least minimal technical data before expecting me to place my order. <grumble> <grumble> |

Broaden your collection, as I have done. I started out with Royal Mint coins but I quickly discovered that comparable coins from other countries were not only cheaper, but better quality too. The hunt starts to see if the dealers will carry these coins since $57.50 is too much for the brilliant uncirculated one. I tend not buy releases direct from The Royal Mint. |

Agreed that RM pricing is badly disconnected from reality and that there seems to be little sense in buying new proofs direct from them.
Their pricing makes me wonder what on earth they're thinking.

I'm not expecting much. Even if I get a reply it will probably just be a bunch of rhubarb about the costs of creating a new design and packaging.
