Hello guys,

Im still searching for a really nice, special coin for a good price.
Hopefully this one is not a fake, but you can tell me more about it I suppose.
I can buy it for 140 dollar, not a bargain but its in a very good condition.

Its Agrippa, Æ27 mm 11.26 gr RIC Gaius 58

Beautiful! Looks like a darn good price too, compared to a quick search for similar coins. I'd snatch it up :)

However, I have not compared it to various known fakes. You might want to do that. Try here.

To me the surfaces look smoothed and the hair 'enhanced'.

I am still a newbie though. Hopefully some of those more knowledgeable will be able to let you know.

There are some porous areas, especially on the reverse-- could be a sign of a cast copy. Are you able to see the coin in person? If so, check the rim, look for any signs of grinding/tooling or remnants of a sprue.

I hate to be the one to say it, but I think it's a fake. There is no wear on the coin at all and the patina looks artificial IMO. I hope I'm wrong but $140 is cheap A real coin in this condition would be much more.

Well you saw the 'casting' so I guess for comparison this is the right time to see the original.
This one came to my pocket circa 1990 via the US representative of "Münzen & Medaillen".
One of my main sources of my Julio-Claudians back in the 'good ole days'. I have always assumed that meant it was real ...... Well nothing being certain we can probably say 99% anyway ! I hope

I think the 'other' coin has been expertly tooled and smoothed. The practice seems much more common and even reasonably accepted in Europe. In the Americas we seem to take a dimmer view of messing around and 'improving' coins with scrapers and buffing wheels. If would not doubt the coin is genuine .....
But going by the quality of the fakes in the 21st Century I would't venture better than 50/50 without really knowing the source.

FR - It seems tooling is becoming a lot more common on this side of the pond especially from of the 'big' auction houses. Half the coins on CNG are 'enhanced' either tooled or smoothed.

Some minor scraping is always acceptable to me. It is when they add details and 'sharpen' the corners that I feel the coin has become seriously damaged. Scraping away some pimples is okay

I am not too picky with my coins if it is within reason (who are we kidding I can't afford half of them anyways) I think it is the hair that gets me though. I just really don't like it when they give someone a new haircut.

This seller is renowned for selling fakes and tooled coins. If you can please look at this thread on Forum....
