VA Independence Bicentennial- Value? Type?

Your piece appears to be a small bronze example of the "Official" bicentennial medal for Virginia. It was sold by the state's authorized Bicentennial Commission.

It was designed by Robert Greenwell; the medals were struck by the Medallic Art Company.

The medal came in a variety of sizes and metals. In bronze, it was available in diameters of 1-1/2" and 2-1/2" â€" yours appears to be the 1-1/2" version. The bronze medals sold for $3.00 and $12.50, respectively.

Silver (0.999 fine) medals were also available in the same small and large sizes. The prices for the silver medals were $12.50 and $80.00, respectively.

A gold-plated silver medal was also available in a 2-1/2" size; it sold for $100. An 18K gold medal in a 1" size was sold for $250.

Your particular example of the medal is fairly common and generally sells for less than $10 (and sometimes for even less than $5).
