I'm trying to use a grading reference but here's where I'm getting stuck: It seems like these coins have very weak strikes and UNC states all the upper hair needs to be visible. When I look at the fly away that goes over her crown it looks like theres wear but most of the reference pictures I look at don't look great either! Same thing with the locks framing her face. They might be worn but I really can't tell. Help me oh mighty forum members! Report this Post to the Staff

nickelsearcher Moderator United States 15566 Posts	Posted 12/03/2013 6:49 pm The Peace dollars are well know for weak strikes so your grading dilemma has been enjoyed by many collectors before you. Do you have the coin in hand? Can you validate that the luster is complete on the high spots with no circulation break/rub? By the photos I judge to be a typical low MS grade example ... the chatter and hits conscribing this coin to an MS61/MS62 grade. If you report rub in hand then I am going AU58. The hair that goes over the crown has a few dings as you can see, and those dings have broke the luster I bought three similar coins off the Bay and my concern was that they were AU and misrepresented to me... all three have dings that break the luster but none of them have consistent breaks over the high points on the devices.
