This will be a before/after thread. Below are the unaltered pics from the auction; when I get the coin in-hand, I'll crack it and post my own. What do you suppose PCGS thinks of this one? Answer will not be posted until after my own images have a chance to be seen. I'm interested because, frankly, these are beyond my normal comfort zone and I had to somewhat rely on the slab. I still think I picked a decent one, though.

Please keep any information to yourself if you dig this auction up.

MS66. I see a small scratch on the reverse below the Buffalo head, unless it's a scratch on the holder. To go 67 it would have to be near flawless. At this level I get lost for the most part! Very pretty coin no matter what! Mike

MS 65 or 66. In addition to having very few flaws it appears to be very well struck. Nice coin!

I agree with Mike. I think it's in a 66 holder and the reverse scratch would prevent it from 67. Congratulations on a very nice coin!

Wow. You guys are sharp - everybody got it right. It's a D/S, by the way, Top Pop but shared with others. So, if the one visible mark keeps it from 67, how the devil do they grade 68's?

Sorry to pry, but if you don't mind my curiousity... what auction site did you get this from and how much did you give for it?

Beautiful coin by the way... are you going to crack it open and put it in the dansco album?

This one came from Heritage. I was right at the top of the market for it, but I think it's a keeper. If I like what my camera sees when I get it, it's coming out of the slab and into my 7070. If I don't like it, I flip it.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it? Your thread gave me an in finding one in MS66+ (I hope it will be as nice as yours).

$250-ish. These go at a substantial premium compared to the D/D's, which are much thinner in Pop than the D/S. You can have a nonvariety 1938-D in MS66 for under $100.

So, here's the coin under my lens. Color is just about right. The slab is skritchy, but I don't care - it's either coming out of the slab, or going away anyways.

Super dave, your pics really show the coin's true beauty.

Zacharycash, inorder to do that you need to get a photobucket account(free) and then just press the image button on the post or just use the one the site provides.

Nice! Both the coin and the photos. The one thing that the original photos showed that I can't see on your's is the "S" behind the "D" but then maybe I'm blind. How about sending that coin on to me so I can see it better! LOL

Best I can do through the slab - autofocus gets a little iffy there, and my eyes aren't up to doing macro work manually.
