While cleaning out the grandparents house I come across a stack of $2 bills still with the paper seal on. I did not go through them to see whose signature was on them or check the serial numbers.

My question is should I open them up or keep them the way they are?

My paper money skills as to enclosures isn't up to par. Mainly because I don't collect/buy or sell paper money that much. Are these seals (Straps) as in the paper seal that covers the presidents face basically?

If so, those are easily replacable. You can buy replacment seals for them at places like NF String, or your local bank would probably be willing to give you one or two straps. If it is simply the strap that covers the presidents face, you should be able to see the series and potential autographs on the bill.

If they are individually enclosed, try holding the bills up close to a light, and see if anything can be seen. Typically older crisp bills command a decent premium. It really depends on how old they are.

Generally without talking about certain prefixes, change overs or special serial numbers, these notes don't command a huge premium. At local auctions I've seen UNC $2 from the birds series sell for around $5... on the bay approx 2.50 to 3.50 in most cases. Once you take shipping and your time into account it's not that great right now.

The great thing is they're UNC... if you can hold on to them.. will make something interesting to show your kids or the next generation that has never seen a $2 bill. If you nee the cash.. spend 'em knowing you're not really spending something of GREAT value.

I think it would be pretty hard to cover the President's face on our $2 bill!

A Bank of Canada strap would probably be worth keeping on - a bank strap would be less inherently desirable. Hang onto them - my grandfather bought my dad an uncut sheet of those $2 bills when they were offered for sale just before the advent of the toonie and they have certainly appreciated more than they would have in a bank account.

if you can afford holding on to them for at least a few more years, I think you should do so. however I think if you do that you may not wish to get rid of them at all.
they become addictive

Thanks everyone for your input. I will hang on to them and keep the bank strap in place.
