A really nice attractive medal - with a bit of History behind it surrounding the rivalry with the Dutch. I don't think its listed in BHM (British Historical medals) - I wonder then if it was made on the continent for the British market?

This medal was just a bit early for Brown's BHM series which began with the accession of George III in 1760. There is a reference in Hawkins' Medallic Illustrations, Volume II, Page 659/#365. It does appear to have been made outside Britain by Ludwig Christian Koch.

According to Forrer, Koch was a mint engraver at the Gotha Mint in Germany from 1750-1793. Although the medal is dated 1750, the year the Free Fishery Society was incorporated, this isn't necessarily the year it was produced.

Of course, I should have thought of that! I see it now in MI.

Are those medals in the gallery in your signature in your collection Bob? A fantastic collection if so. The Pondicherry medal in bronze is one I've been chasing in high grade for a while now
