The defeat of the British navy by combined Franco-Spanish forces off the Mediterranean coast of France in 1744 was a huge embarrassment to the British and resulted in the court-marshal of the fleet commander and others. This brass medal appears to weigh in on the culpability for the loss and has letters A through H in various sections of the medal but unfortunately, I've been unable to locate any key to the letters.

Here's the attempt by the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich:

Quote:
Counter commemorating the action off Toulon, 1744. Obverse: A human body B, suspended from a gallows D; beyond a naval engagement, A and C, one small ship in flames. Exergue: '1743/ 4'. Reverse: Troops drawn up in front of a fortified town E, to which ships F, G are advancing. In foreground other troops H. A lion I, attacking a cock.

Thanks, this got me thinking that one of the British "magazines" of the time might have reprinted
something. I'm off to look.
