I usually post on the world forum but could not pass up what may be the first circulating Jefferson nickel counterfeit since the days of Henning. This comes from NYC, the auction will disappear shortly but here it is

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...181377572985

This is what the coin looks like:

What does the forum think?

The profile of Jefferson's face looks all wrong to me. Especially the chin and nose. Plus the throat is wrong.

Interesting, but it seem hardly worth it to counterfeit a nickel these days.

I contacted the seller earlier today, letting him know that it's not an error. By his response, I believe he genuinely thought it was an error coin.

Yes it is but how often do you think Mr. Average Joe looks at the nickels he gets in change.

I am just shocked that they even exist.

Of course people are bidding - I am one of them. I want to know how it was made. If I don't win I am going to start hunting in boxes of nickels until I find one like I did with the Hennings.

My thoughts exactly. Which is why crudely counterfeiting modern, low-value change could be a successful venture....

Maybe someone wants to be the next Henning...

My thought exactly. If someone was trying to make a modern Henning, they sure don't have the same skill. Don't know what to think, but I'm going to keep an eye on it.

This is possibly the strangest counterfeit I've ever seen. Almost looks like they tried to recreate a nickel with a hand-carved die...

Makes me wonder if this was perhaps an art project or a counterfeiter testing out his skills on small game before tackling Morgans or 09-S VDBs?
