Would you have graded this a 58 based on whatever happened to the "Y: in Liberty, or does that not matter from a technical point?

It does not matter from a technical view point. The coin is either MS or it's not. Sometimes an accumulation of contact marks combined with diminished luster lands a low MS coin in an AU holder but it shouldn't.

This coin appears AU+ in the images with the reverse looking more 55ish.

The high point of the eagle's wing shows apparent wear.

To be clear, I concur about the wear and the contact marks. But there seems to be a mark on the "Y" that is prominent. If I were grading, I'd give it a 55. Perhaps, that is why I am not a grader :)

The gouge through headdress above the "Y" causes me more pain.

Honestly? It does look more like an AU55 in the images. I assume it must have excellent luster in-hand because it appears as a mid-level AU piece in Heritage's images.

P.S. Any image can be tough to grade from.
