Hi everyone, new to the site. I started going through some of my grandfather's old coins he gave me and came across this coin. Researched online and only 47k were minted, high value coin. Can someone help me out assessing the grading and value of this coin? edit: after looking at prices, this coin is valuing anywhere from $1k-$10k based on the grading. How much do you think I should be asking for at a coin show? Thanks Edited by billy_0621 06/02/2014 2:24 pm

Welcome to the Forum. The details on the coin are very good and it may make the AU categories. The minimum I can see is XF45. With better pictures I think it makes the AU. I suspect your grandfather kept it tucked away since it doesn't have many hits. If the coin has any luster at all it will easily make AU50 or above. Here is a site for pricing. It comes pretty close to fair market value most of the time. nlp http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml

Thanks! I brought it to a local coin dealer and he mentioned the 2 toning (brighter areas around the stars and letter) indicates it was polished some time ago and that it decreases the value and that it wouldn't grade. However, he was not a specialist in high value coins and recommended I bring it to the next coin show in my area. Also, he thought the grading would be VF or XF regardless of the double toning. However, I thought the coin would grade much higher given the detail for a 200 yr old coin.

I think it is a strong EF-45+ details. I don't think to coin has been polished, but yes, I do think it may have been cleaned at some point. Great find! I think someone may pay anywhere from $3000 to $6000 for the coin.

Definitely consider having this one certified by PCGS or NGC, if you are planning to sell it, would help with the resale value..

your grandfather had a great eye. There are quite a few Capped Bust half dollar pros here, hopefully they'll see this and chime in. -MV

It looks XF-AU to me but not sure about the detail grade. Try this place Sheridan'scoins.comHe has a fixed price list and a auction site as well.

Well, first, HOLY COW! Second wow! Third, possibly AU. This coin would likely go for in excess of 6K in my opinion. If it slabs problem free 10k wouldn't be out of the relm of possibilities. Problem free AU...... Even more. Beautiful coin! I would say this is a absolute candidate for slabbing, cleaned or not. This coin is often counterfeited, so authentication alone will ease buyers minds to spend serious cash on this one. I'm super jealous, as this is the only year CBH I don't have.
By the way, the eye appeal of this coin is very good IMO. Keep is up to date on what you decide to do with it!

Thanks everyone for the replies. Alright so I went to a rare coin dealer and talked to an older man with a lot of experience, 40 years in the business. He looked at it for 20+ minutes and believes it is genuine but needs more advanced equipment to be 100% sure. He recommended me sending it in to PCGS to get authenticated.
He graded it as either Fine 12 or EF20 and offered $600 not authenticated. $900-$1200 if authenticated. However, retail for this coin even at an EF20 grading (which I thought was low) is over $4k and he's offering me $1k. Do dealers usually take this much off the top? Is there a way to contact interested buyers directly without getting ripped over by a coin dealer?

Sounds like he is intentionally under-grading the coin to get a deal.. A reputable dealer would assist you with getting it graded by PCGS.

Wow!, great coin, I think what's happening is this dealer is trying to take advantage of you, he is under grading it and offering you bogus low prices even for the grade he assigned. Run away from him and send that thing to pcgs, then if you still want to sell it rent a table at a big show or send it to a good auction house which I'm sure some members here have names to. Your coin is an investment rarity probably never seen or sold to the public or private collectors and unless you need the money I suggest you get it certified and than sit on it for a while.
Feel free to call me Will.

The guy with 40 years in the business is also dishonest as they come. The coin is obviously better than Fine to Very Fine and he knows it. $600, please! Take your time with this one, take the advice given and it will certainly be worth your while. Send it to PCGS as suggested, see where is grades, and then assess your situation from there.

It sounds like by the mintage total that this could be a 1815/2.... Is anyone seeing this in the pic?

Thanks guys! I'll send it in to get authenticated and report back. Any significant differences between PCGS or NGC?
