@liberty It is an 1815/2 to my knowledge. I could be wrong but I believe all 42k 1815 half dollars are 1815/2. It isn't visible with the naked eye, can only see through microscope according to the coin dealer I went to.

PCGS certified coins tend to net a higher rate of return when selling.
Yes, all 1815 dated halves are the 1815/2 variety.

I'm seeing a nice AU-50 and possibly AU-53 coin. Might have been cleaned or the odd toning caused by the way it has been stored over the years, hard to tell from photos. Definitely get this coin certified by either PCGS or NGC as it will increase the sales price of the coin when you go to sell. The cost to do this will be well worth it.

to the forum! WOW! You don't see 1815 Capped Bust Halves this nice very often. For the grade I think that it is at least AU-50 and is more likely an AU-53. Hard to tell if this coin will grade problem free or not, I think that it might and that if it was cleaned it was a long time ago. Definitely have this graded by either PCGS or NGC, although they are both good third party grading companies PCGS certified coins tend to bring the most money. If you do sell you may want to consider consigning this coin with Heritage Auctions. I don't think dealers at the local coin show can or will give you full market value for this level of coin. Quote: The guy with 40 years in the business is also dishonest as they come. The coin is obviously better than Fine to Very Fine and he knows it. $600, please! Take your time with this one, take the advice given and it will certainly be worth your while. Send it to PCGS as suggested, see where is grades, and then assess your situation from there. I agree completely with jpbone. Take this slow and don't be in a hurry to sell. This is an investment level coin and I believe that this year will only continue to increase in value.

I'll be darned if this grades under VF-35! That dealer's (A) Giving you a false grade and (B) Giving you a horrible price. You could fetch a few thousand for a coin in VF-20, but this is far above that. Good luck with PCGS and make sure to give us the results!

XF-45 assuming no luster present. Please do not forget to post the results should you decide to run it by a TPG.

Easily an EF-45 coin. Possibly cleaned (Why? from the protected areas around the obverse stars and letters on the reverse.) Still, IMO, a $6,000 coin. Good luck with this one. It's rare. Getting it certified is an important first step. Please keep us in the loop as this coin goes through the next months!

I'm thinking a grade of EF45/AU maybe with cleaned details. I would definitely go with PCGS on certifying this coin. Wether or not you do it yourself by joining their club, or through an authorized dealer. Just make sure the coin goest to them via registered mail, have the package sealed up with kraft paper and tape before going to the USPS, that is not something that needs to be broadcast as to what it is in the package, send it only via registered mail insured, the safest way to ship an item like this. Billy I see you are in Texas, (me too), if you are in the Dallas area, you may want to have Heritage Coin Auctions take a look at it, in the Houston area try US Rare Coins Inc. on the Katy Freeway, both can help you with attribution and get the coin to PCGS safely. Your coin if real and certified by PCGS should be worth somewhere between $5-20 thousand dollars - very nice! Hope the coin gets a high grade! I too would say xf45 with a very good chance of getting AU. Take everyone's advice and get that baby graded. It'll be worth it in the end. The dealer you took it to is a flat out crook. You should have laughed in his face. I myself would have taken offense to that offer. He obviously thought you a fool. I agree with westcoin, if you live near heritage have them take a look at it.

I love this coin. I am relatively new to collecting but have gotten a couple Capped Bust Halves graded by ANACS and they seem to be pretty hard on grading. Looking at the ones I have and this one, I truly believe this is AU53 or AU55 and my guess is an old cleaning but acceptable and will come back problem free. I would be amazed if it was lower than AU50. Good luck.

Looks AU. Unfortunately you'd be lucky to get an honest appraisal or honest offers from buyers at a coin show. Don't clean it. Send it to a TPG for grading. Thanks for posting it here. Hope you'll keep us updated.

Billy! That's a beautiful coin. I'm a serious bust half collector and the 1815 is the one I'm missing in my collection. Definitely get it graded at PCGS and you will find it's value to be several thousand dollars. The 'experienced' dealer is a cheat - stay away.
