I was just looking at my coins and wanted to archive the ones the I have defintively VAM identified (with your help). And looking at my 1884-O with a die break above cap identified as 23A (revisioned 23B from 02/2014) I saw I had few pics so I took some other pics and I came across a clashed mark that I've never seen. It is the clash and transfer of the stalks and lower portions of the cotton bolls from the obverse to the area just above the arrow heads on the reverse....how explained at the vamworld - attribution 101 page. Is this a common clashed mark to find? This coin has so many other clased marks.

Clash marks can be missleading in many cases... and in others the can be direct likes to a positive IDE of a VAMed coin...in this case VAM 23B should have the break above the cap.....if you don't have it you don't have the VAM.....as attributed for VAM 23B... Clash marks are hints of possible VAM designations, but without letter transfers they are seen as just junk...until the letter is found.....Don't have time to figure your VAM out right now, but thou7ght I would let you know.....there are levels of understandings within VAMMING......Someone who "KNOWS" more than the basics....can tell if a scratch here and there or a die break at a certain spot on the coin are tel tale signs of a specific VAM....ONE SHOULD NOT try jump ahead of the knowledge....reading into cracks and die poop...Take your time.. many will help....ALwayys start from the beginning...

I know that the knowledge of the world of morgan VAM is very wide and I don't think to be so arrogant as to want to skip steps in the understanding of vams. It's a little more than 1 year that I looked out of this world and I was fascinated. On the other hand, assuming that I had previously identified the vam23b (one of the few times that I haven't asked the help of ccf forum, which for me is almost always required) I was in front of a clashed mark unknown for me, because of my lack of knowledge on the subject, what else could I do if not going to check before vamworld site and then ask opinions to ccf friends?

That's a known location for clashing artifacts, when the clash is strong. Uncommon, but not scarce enough to add value or significant interest.

I'm not sure if that clash mark is common or not. I've only run into it maybe a couple of times. I've also got a VAM-23B and I'm pretty sure I have another VAM with that clash mark but I can't put my finger on it. I hope someone will chime in that knows as you have piqued my curiosity. edit to add - SsuperDdave is one of the someone's I was referring to. While I was scrolling through photos of my Morgans SD answered the question.

I think a key note on this cotton boll clash is the note on 101 that states if this is present more than likely there is not an "E" clash. We all know the E's are the ones everyone wants, right Russ?

23B she is - the obverse die crack is diagnostic. Between the major crack and the complex clashing, this one's a very nice advertisement for VAMming.
