Over on the ebay Australia coin & stamp forum (of all places!), someone's just found dcarr's website with his UNA "amero" fantasy patterns. I hadn't noticed them on dcarr's website before, so I was just wondering what other people (particularly North American people) thought about these hypothetical ameros. As I said over there: The "amero" is as yet merely a hypothetical currency; they're nowhere near the level of official discussions or proposals yet, let alone thinking of designs for it. Too many people in the USA fear their economy would be dragged down by attaching it to the "weaker" economies of their neighbours, while Canada, Mexico and basically everyone else fears US dominance. For this idea to ever get off the ground, the American economy would really have to go basket case first.
Interesting designs - sort of a Back to the Thirties look - but I can't see them being acceptable to the Canadians and Mexicans - they're way too "American". Eagles? A shield saying "liberty"? Come on.Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

The only problem is that all the images on the ones I have seen are American. Maybe it should be called a pattern for Occupation currency.

I like the HWAY from Canada to mexico if it will happen, for they are also trying to connect Siberia through Alaska by underground for it is unpassable because of the ice in the ground, maybe China can link and build the orient express all through out Great Britain maybe both through the middle east and Russia.

I figured a discussion about them would turn up here. Yes, the designs are intentianally "retro". The obverse is definitely a 1930's style Seated Liberty. The reverse looks just a little bit like some silver Mexican Pesos.
The obverse is definitely a USA style. But like with the Euro coins, each country has a different design. I envisioned mine to be the USA version of the Amero.

Guess the next currency union will be that of the GCC (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain ...) no matter whether it actually comes in 2010 or later. The major difference between the euro - and one day the GCC currency - on one hand and North America on the other hand is that in the latter case you would have one major participant. Saying that it dwarfs the other other two would not be quite right, but it would certainly be even more difficult than in Europe or the Gulf to explain why all members would profit from a currency union. The designs are not bad, and I like that Seated Liberty. But even if each participating country gets its own design, shouldn't there be some common elements? Oh, and one funny thing - that A in a circle reminds me of something that you would most probably not want to have on a coin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AnarchismChristian

There isn't going to to be an actual dedicated highway constructed. It is more of way of making the flow of goods between the countries easier by improving border crossings and reducing the red tape.

Nice designs, but like you said, very Americanised. The obverse on the first two coins remind me of Britannia on the English Penny. Steve
