I found this very interesting article on the internet! I wonder how much of this goes on or not ?

The Error Coin Conspiracy Theory

Lets all suppose if someone wanted to create a market with error coins and to make a very substantial amount of money on their investment. They would first gather a large amount of error coins or rolls or boxes that may contain error coins and begin to sell them with others involved so as to raise the going prices for these coins.

The higher the going market for any coin the more they are sought after. Because when any ordinary person dabbling in the error coin market happens to see, for instance, new coinage coming out and then sees on any of the online auctions selling a new error for $500 to $1000's of dollars, it then begins the scramble for the unsuspecting individuals that now will purchase error coins at values set forth in the beginning by the conspirators.

When a coin is sold and bought by any ruthless dealers or group of persons on any auction, the average person involved in collecting errors notices the huge prices certain coins are being sold at (and individuals thought is wow I can make money also.) Thus the public now begins to look for and tries to sell similar coins without the same results as those involved in the conspiracy.

In the conspiracy the amount these error coins are being bought and sold at are only costing the conspirators the amount the auction sites charge them for their scheme. Possibly the ones involved will try to buy up as many of these type coins they can to try and keep them out of the hands of the public and to drive the prices up and will occasionally, in order to keep it looking legit, will buy a coin from the public at a high price to keep the enthusiasm alive in the market.

If anyone hasn't noticed, the error coin market values are sometimes led by unscrupulous dealers or groups who can pass a coin around over a period of time to increase the value of certain coins. I believe the theory is harder to produce on real old coins, it appears to be much easier to accomplish in the new coinage market that has yet to be established by the conspirators and the unsuspecting public. These conspirators get in and get out for the most part in time to start when a new coin is minted and distributed to the public.

Most coins can be bought at face value with the same chance of finding errors as those being offered. How many have found coins the same or similar to those sold by unscrupulous dealers and weren't able to get the same value from identical coins? Once the conspirators start the scramble, the public jumps in and begins to run this conspiracy for them and lessens the chance of being caught in the scheme.

Not all dealers and sellers of error coins are crooked. Though the theory I believe does go on and the best thing that can be done is for the public that's involved in buying error coins to become more educated and patient when new coinage is introduced into the market. Don't be part of the problem, instead be part of the solution.
Conspiracy is a Crime.

Conspiracy: An agreement between two or more persons to commit a crime or accomplish a legal purpose through illegal action

Conspiracy theory is seeking to explain a disputed case or matter as a plot by a secret group or alliance rather than an individual or isolated act.

the speared bison comes to mind, the founder knew months before they released the information to the public because they were buying up all they could find to corner the market on them. I do not think it is shady business or anything like that I just feel they had more foresight than I would have had and was also able to keep their mouth closed and not share the information with other collector friends like I would have done right away all of which turned out very well for them

I do look for errors in circulated coins, but finding dramatic error is far fron reality, that is either buy bags of coins in the bank or in the mint, that quality control miss those coins,in the past dramatic error was purchased from the mint or from the employee as other thread mentioned this and the QC remelted the error and they are more stricter in the past than today.

As other coins not error others kept until the value goes up,error in the past presedential dollar is one I could think of, a mistake but those people who follow error coins came first to the info and make rest history, the rarity of error coins or its existing number of certain type of error is hard to track down either from the data base of the TPGs and other records auction or dealers record or from the input of the expert like this forum that a normal collector may find hard to gather knowledge of its rarity and value as other collection both errors and other coins I dont know if the value will goes up or down in the future, as other expert have a graph showing the increase in value of coins in the past until now tommorow is still a question on how much its worth just fo me.

Bryan, I agree with your analogy. Even though the person who found the speared buffalo, kept quiet. He still took a chance that someone else did not report the finding first.

No Conspiracy. Pam found the Speared and had to do a lot of work to get it out there and accepted as a "Named Error". A lot of work.

The Conspiracy theory doesn't work because the error in question has to be legit, has to be big, and has to have great eye appeal. Pam got all that in one coin and that was quite lucky. She hasn't done it again since. This is a coin that people want and don't have to be "sold" on. The coins sold themselves and this error has a very low mintage which accounts for the price.

You can't push a ton of errors that people don't want. (errrrr cept maybe them smooth edgers that have a very high mintage, but that was the media's fault)

I agree that there are unscrupulous sellers who can change the market on perceived error coins and it doesn't take a conspiracy to do it. Many dealers have the capital to corner the market on their own. Also, keep in mind that the dealers are the ones setting the values for the price guides.

The main reason that this forum was developed was to provide education to help people avoid getting caught up in the hype so that they can protect themselves. Knowledge truly is power.
