This copper ain't pretty, but ............  This 1847 large cent bears the logo punch of Edward Knox, a coppersmith. Born in Ireland in 1812. he first appeared in the 1842 NY City Directory at 110 Fulton Street. Between 1848-56, he was established at 215 Fulton. His property tax assessment in 1857 was $10,500, a tidy sum in those days. His lucrative business was the manufacture of boilers for hotels and steamers for stores. One of his ads in an 1862 NY City Directory stated that he performed all kinds of copper work, including distillery, confectionery and soda water apparatus, steamboat and brewery work; then, located at 362 Greenwich St. Edward died the following year, 1863. To date, no other counterstamps by Knox have been recorded by catalogers Rulau or Brunk. This stamp was most likely used to mark some of Knox's tools and/or products.
