Found this at a new dealer I visited today and I bought it. It's a very interesting coin in-hand. IMO, it's a high grade 1931S that was in a fire. To me, the LIBERTY looks doubled. Is there such a coin? What would something be worth in your opinion?

Thanks for looking and giving me your opinions!

I like the dirrent toning colors on the back, despite of it being in a fire, it looks really cool. I could buy this too if I had the chance, looks great

Wow, now I'm tempted to throw my key date coins into a bonfire!

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any evidence of hub doubling in the pictures.

I like it! I have a couple black toned cents, maybe they were in a fire also. I do not see any doubling either. I would pay gray sheet for it.

I would guess a candle or lighter. A big fire would leave it looking rougher. Terrible thing to do to any coin, even worse a Key date coin. I've got a roll of 1955-S coins that someone ruined. Interesting colored coins, but value ruined by the treatment one person gave them....

The coin has by all appearances been through a fire ,, I see no doubling on Liberty.

I think I see doubling on Liberty, specifically on the T. However, my knowledge of doubling is profoundly limited.

I don't see any doubling but that could just be the angle.
your coin looks more like it was coated with something. I could be wrong about it though. I know that some of the old timers used to coat their coins to keep them from turning colors. put it in acetone for a few days and see what happens.
other than the damage it looks like a very nice coin. if you don't mind saying what did you pay for it? a bit personal I know but I think it is at least a 100.00 coin but just wanted to check my price guide in my head lol you know it has to be calibrated now and then lol

I just ran across one of Coops post and read that it was lacquer that they coated them in. I didn't know what exactly it was but knew of it being done in the early days and yes a lot of collectors did it ruined a lot of coins

Nice 31-S! I still have that hole to fill.

It looks to me like a bad attempt at AT, but I can't be sure. Very nice detail, though.

Nobody wants to take a stab at the market value of this coin? I'm thinking about putting it on ebay just to see what happens.

There is little value left in this coin due to the damage . If you could get AG money for it I think you would be doing extremely well, but I really think PO-1 money is more realistic .

at least that is where I would be with it . about 15 to 25 dollars .

Liberty looks like from a worn die. Mint mark appears as an RPM maybe. Look closer at the S. Might be a D or another S under it. I don't think that is from a fire. Can't see how a fire would pit a coin that is basically all one type of metal. I could see it in a layered coin, but if those are holes in the metal, not sure how a coin would do that. Regardless, it wouldn't be worth much. Note the prices of that coin is basically very low in MS grades due to the massive hoarding in such grades back in the 30's area. If perfect only a little over $100. Almost looks like something that was pepper boxed with fine grains of sand in a shot shell. Type of stuff used in a .357 shot shell.

There's no holes or pits, if you're seeing that, it's due to my poor photography skills. This coin looks a lot better in hand than the pictures show. It's definately MS or I wouldn't have bought it.

I think I'm going to return it based on what you guys are saying. He had a couple BU 30's cents that caught my eye and I already have a 31S. At the time, it seemed like a great buy.

Thanks
