Was looking for some information about the acceptable weights of coins from this series. I understand the striking weight was 13.48 grams, but considering wear what is an acceptable weight range?

A friend has a beautiful 1801 in VFish condition and it's weight is 13.34gr. That's what got me wondering.

Thanks
Ben

There are no official tolerance figures for the coins before 1836, but they would probably be the same as the later figures +/- .097 grams. So 13.34 grams is just a hair light but I don't think it is to far off. I f the coin had been at the edge of the light range when new it would have only lost .04 grams of weight in wearing down to VF.

I would love to post a picture but don't have permission. But, here is the link to the thread w/pictures from another coin forum.
http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=29289

I know all the 'information (alleged) provided' points toward it's authenticity, (I) still have a concern or two with the weight and tone. I've read that the weights of the half dollar planchets were very exact (precisely 1/2 of the silver dollar). Then again the process of striking or (screw-pressing) coins was quite rudimentary and some metal may have sheared off...

Also, the tone has me concerned as it looks like the counterfeits which have plagued the hobby of late.

I hope my concerns are just figments of my overactive imignation, but as you can see there are many knowledgable (forum experts) individuals who've declined to add comments when normally they would have added their comments.

Take Care
Ben
