1869 Shield Nickel "tall Date"

roach Valued Member United States 364 Posts	Posted 11/10/2007 11:49 pm I was looking at the NGC site on Shield nickels and noticed several varieties listed. I think I may have a tall date because the date touches the bottom of the shield. Any one have any info on these varieties or know a good source for info on them. None of the major TP's have any info on any of this stuff on their sites which is ridiculous, you would think getting info out there would get more people interested and more submissions= more profit. foundinrolls Pillar of the Community United States 3507 Posts	Posted 11/11/2007 01:06 am Yours is not a tall date variety On the tall date, the top of the 6 and the bottom of the 9 are open. The openings in the 8 are more oval and all the numerals are more elongated in appearance. The positions of the dates vary on the Shield nickel series as a "gang punch" with four digits was used in order to punch the date into the die. The positioning being higher or lower is not an indication of the tall date variety. The shape of the numerals is the important factor and yours shows a normal date. Report this Post to the Staff
