I'm looking at bidding on a 1864 shielded US 2 cent coin with 180 die rotation error. I would say this grade is close to VG & would list for about $20 without the error.

Opinions on grade?

How much premium is it worth with the error?

Is it worth getting certified to increase resale value premium?

So you are saying this coin is in medal orientation and not coin orientation? I would say grade-wise AG taking into account the corrosion. I would think that a dramatic rotation like that would add some premium but how much I have no idea. I am guessing that the condition would hold back much of an increase in value.

Hi Yechi,

I'd agree with Biokemist: net AG due to corrosion.

Rotated dies on 2¢ pieces are not especially rare. I would much rather wait for a no-problem specimen in say VF or better. A nice die rotation error will add some value to the coin. At a guess, if I wanted a rotated example I might pay up to a 50% premium over the price of a normal coin. I'd pay to certify a mint state example, but probably not a lower grade coin unless it was a key date.

I agree with Jaobler. A basic thing to learn with older coppers is that die rotation other than being used to identify Sheldon numbers and such is not rare. many coins are encountered with die rotation and there is essentially no premium added.
