A man has to look his best when he is hacking off the limbs of his rivals .

They'd have to be really careful though not to get blood and dirt (mostly blood) on themselves to stay looking their best lol. Quote: Man, I would hate to have been in the Roman army at that time. I think I would have joined just to wear the cool-looking uniforms

Those uniforms are pretty cool :). I read somewhere though that by 430 CE the Western army( what was left of it) really didnt wear that much armor at all. Interesting to say the least.

A set of armor got pretty expensive by that point and for the soldiers that did have one, there was a good chance that it was passed down, a practice that continued as far as I know at least in early Frankish Gaul.

Give me several minutes and I'll add my own pictures that I've found.

That would make sense. I do know that by the time of the Eastern Augustus Maurice, the Soldiers were wearing heavy armor again. Can't wait to see what you have to show us.

Very nice! What is your opinion on the "defense in depth" policy of the Late Roman Army?

BTW for anyone that watches something (film, tv show, etc.) that takes place in the late Roman Empire and they show soldiers wearing 1st/2nd century gear, that is historically inaccurate. They are supposed to look something like in the pictures that have been posted.

Here is an (armored) early Frankish warrior. Hardly a difference from a late Roman soldier huh? Quote: You mean like every film Hollywood has made about the Late Roman Empire You forgot History Channel documentaries (before they switched over to showing loggers, miners, and aliens).

VK you still did not answer my earlier question " What is your opinion on the "defense in depth" policy of the Late Roman Army?"
