New Variety - 1/1 - 1858 20 Cent

I'm very surprised that Brian cert'd this. ICCS normally will not list something until it's recognized by Charlton in the front of the book. I remeber seeing this variety in some of the old Zoell stuff from the late 60's/early 70's.

Very similar to the blundered I obverse varieties that are known and recognized by ICCS . They do certify Non standard varieties for an additional cost. This so called 1/1 was listed in Zoell and is a known anomaly. In my opinion certainly not rare or worth the kind of money asked.

Why would they use such a narrow topped one..?..
I looked at a zoom photo of the 1 and sort of detected 2 tynes sticking out of the central column and also saw a faint smudge to the left of the top of the 1. If what I see is not an optical illusion , this could indeed be a "dropped 1". Dropped 1's are silver dust and crud accumulations in the die which are dropped in a lump on the planchet before a strike. This explains the narrowness because the cavity of the 1 is narrower at the bottom. If this is a dropped 1, it is not a variety---just a doubling error.
