After seeing the Lincoln thread about PCGS grading, I thought I would put up another example of a possible overgrade by PCGS, an it's not a Lincoln ! This is the only slabbed coin I own, purchased for too much and kept for my own grading lesson. Still awaiting my own submissions to ANACS from the MSNS show in Nov....then I will have a few more slabs- hopefully not overgraded. Grade opinions please, I will post PCGS grade later.

Ouch sleaklight ! After I told you I loved that 38-D Buffalo grade !
It is an MS coin, I have a hard time taking pics through slabs, they always seem a little fuzzy. I am guessing it is the autofocus focusing on the slab and not the coin, working on that !
There are actually more marks than you can see in the picture, there is a thin scratch on the obverse that runs from chin to forehead near the rim, very tough to see even in hand. A somewhat deeper gash at the bridge of Washington's nose in the field, and several hits in the hair...I count at least ten small hits in the hair alone and you cannot see them in pictures. I could not see these marks in the pictures I bought it from either- very disapointed in PCGS on this one.

lol Sorry InfiniteInterest, it must be the lighting or a weak strike? Well, I upgrade my grade to ms 64 since you state they maybe overgraded it your opinion. I would say 63ish maybe 64 borderline? I dunno, I am real bad with quarters

Maybe its the picture but I am not seeing MS definition on the breast and wings...The same pretty much with the obverse, but again, it may be the pictures...From what I can see, I would say AU-50 but I am still trying to learn this stuff...so what do I know?

Must be the pictures, sorry about that. This is an MS coin, if you look at the close up of the obverse and take into consideration the other marks not visible: From previous post.. I personally would not grade this above MS-63, very average in every way- strike, luster and marks. Nothing indicates to me that this is an MS-65 coin- but hey apparently I don't know something they do....

I'm not an expert on quarters, but MS65 seems a bit high for this coin. I agree with mountainXBGL about the lack of detail on the chest and wings. I would say MS63 or slightly lower, but that could be the photo through the slab.

I was going to say MS. I think the strikes are often weakish on those. I'm no quarter expert, but I can see the breast feathers, that's one of the first wear points I believe. It's a very nice coin IMO.

From the pics provided, there are enough marks in the prime focal area that I would have guessed ms64.
