Is anyone making a distinguishment between Satin uncirculated and regular uncirculated coins for collecting purposes. I noticed in my Coin Values Magazine, they have satin listed separately, but I'm wondering if people are collecing both seriously. I feel inclined to collect both since they have been included in a major publication. What are your feelings?

Anyone that collects mint sets by default already collects the satin finish coins since they have been included in mint sets since 2005. I buy a mint set every year but if they were not in the mint sets, I would probably not make a point to purchase them just for the sake of having satin finish coins.

IMHO, the 8xxx series Dansco albums (the ones that include proofs) will eventually have separate spaces for the satin finish versions. It is no different than including SMS versions from 1965~1967 (even though there were no proof sets those years). Again, just my opinion, but the satin finish mint sets are not the same as business strikes as used in the past.

I have found that I can't let myself get cought up in every variety of coin. I just go for the P,D, and S of every year and move on. I am so far back now that I can't even think about uncirculated. I wouldn't mess with it if I were you.

biokemist6, I agree there are so many varieties, it makes it difficult to collect sometimes. That's why I don't collect error coins for the most part. The OCD part of me wants otherwise. It would bother me so much if it was easy to get a complete set of regular business strikes. I always thought that was the purpose of the mint set, but now the mint changed it up on us.

i collect them seriously. I think the regular uncirculated coins have more of a potential to go up in value though.

littleboy are you saying that you collect the business strike seriously or just the satin uncirculated or both?

both. my bank account was getting hungry so while I was trying to feed it again, I looked for inexpensive varieties. when the satin uncirculated sets came out, it was cheap so I got them, but I still collect circulation issues. now I realize that trying to put a date/mint/hub/style collection together is very much more difficult.

I don't like having mint sets that aren't the same coins as the ones in my pocket. Having as perfect an example of the coins in my pocket is what drew me to collecting in the first place. So it's too bad that a mint set doesn't get me that. Don't get me wrong, I think the satins look great, I just don't like the idea philosophically. Once the State Quarters are done, I plan on buying a ready-made set. It would be nice to have a set made from mint sets, but the early ones would be non-satin, and the later ones would be satin. I'll probably get a business strike set (unless I go nuts and buy a proof set).

For those of you who collect the business stikes, how do you do it. I went to my bank the other day and asked them when they received rolls from the Federal Reserve; for example pennies, are they all the same (current) year? Like 2007? They told me they don't order rolls from the Federal Reserve because they have so many people bringing in rolls of change. This frustrates me. While I know alot of collectors enjoy searching, I'd preder an easier way to obtain a set of business strikes than searching through tons of change. Anybody have any ideas on a better way to obtain business strikes?

AHHH, I'm having a hard time with these satin coins. My plan was to open up my 2007 mint unc set and use those coins in my new presidential dansco, then pop open my presidential proof set and complete last years set. Then I just realized they were SATIN. Now, I'm very particular with my sets I build. What are your thoughts on these darn satin coins? Should I just use them and then make sure the rest will be satin? Will the mint continue making satin? Argh....I think maybe I should find some Biz strikes and stop pondering this idea? Please help me decide :D :D

Since the presidential series started after they started making the mint sets satin, I say just continue what you are doing. I do not see the mint backtracking on this, but do not be surprised if they do. In that event, you have every right to get upset! I know I would. But, anything you commit to when dealing with mint issued sets is bound to have risks. Gosh, now I am second guessing my advice! Grrr!

Thx Jbuck. I dont know why, but I'm so hesitant on opening my 07 mint set for those satin coins. I'd use the presidentials no problem I guess, but I dont know what i'd do with the rest. I dont want to put a satin penny in with all my biz strikes etc...
Am I too picky?

Absolutely not! I would have the same problem and actually do have a similar one. For some reason, only my Kennedy album has places for SMS coins (1965~1967). I was able to find the 66 and 67 singly, but the 65 I busted from a set. I now have the other denominations with no real place for them since those albums do not have SMS slots. If they did, I would have just bought three sets and broke them apart! That has me rethinking my first comment and the possibility of Dansco adding slots for the Satin series... Only the Kennedy album has them, at least on the ones I got; all the other albums with proofs included skip the SMS. But I digress... For now, I have the extra SMS coins in one of my miscellany albums. Maybe you could do the same or start a separate Satin set if you plan to keep getting them for the presidential series?

Well I thought about starting a set of satin presidentials since they did come out during the satin era, so obtaining all satin would be simple enough and I could hunt down some Unc biz presidentials as well.
Bah, such decisions I have trouble making lol.
