What type of coins would you go and buy with it? I've got $500 to spend and can not figure out what to get one day I like one thing and then the next day I will change my mind.

Such a personal question really. Every member will tell you their favorite type of coin. But since you have shifting preferences, can you think of a strategy to get the coins you like right now but that are readily exchangeable for others? What I mean is, if I buy a capped bust half dollar from my dealer and leave it in the holder he sells it in, then I can get that much credit (or nearly so, it might cost me 5% or I might break even or make money if I've waited so long that the coin has appreciated) by bringing it back when I want to move into another area. I don't mean to weasel out of providing a specific answer on what I'd do with a hypothetical $500, but you've got to make your collection satisfy you. Can you tell us what you have, what you are interested in collecting and what you think you might want in six months? If you don't already have an annual subscription to a magazine like Coin Prices, I would recommend spending the $18.98 or whatever it is to get one for a year. |

I would use the money to complete my Kennedy collection. Then with whats left I would work on my bi-metallic world coin collection.

As halfbust said it's a very personal decision. Personally I would go after a nice key, some of which can be had in that price range. You can get a very nice AU 1928 Peace dollar for around that much. There's also higher end keys you can pick up in lower grades, the 1885 V nickel for instance. |

Well, since I'm new at this and trying to fill my first few lincoln cents albums--I'd also get key dates with the $500

I would go for a nice VF Classic Head large cent or an EF Seated dollar, either one would fit nicely in my type set  |

Do not listen to any of these people that attempt to help you. The best way to help you over this delima is for you to send me the $500. I will sacrifice myself attempting to figure out what to do with that money. This will take that problem off your mind, allow you to sleep better, not worry about where the money went. I'm the only one truely willing to help, you see.  Or hit the banks for 10 - $50 bags of pennies. Not rolls, bags. |

Use the first $100 for some books on coins you're especially interested in. Study and know the rare coins, then go shopping with the remaining $400. It should pay off well.

As habib said, whatever the choice is it needs only to appeal to you. That said, I would go after something from the Carson City mint.....there's just something special about that CC on the reverse, and the coin will always have a strong market if and when the time comes to sell.  |
