"1909 S VDB Lincoln Wheat penny Cent Damaged Good Filler" should read "1909 S VDB Chinese cent copy with rim issue"

I watch this forum and try to learn from what I see, but I rarely grasp why you guys call out a coin as a fake. This one for example. If anyone wants, I wonder how anyone can tell it's a Chinese fake? I don't doubt what you're saying, just wondering what you see that tells you.

Thanks,

John

John, I think in this case it's the mint mark, and VDB that are wrong. Also if I'm not mistaken, the rim is weak at 2 and 8 o'clock, which I think I've seen before on other fakes. The surfaces also look 'prepared,' and unnatural for normal wear.

Thanks Ed. That was the only thing I was thinking is that it was awfully strange that the surfaces weren't beat up at all on a circulating coin from 100+ years ago.

John - the overall "finish/texture" of the coin has the appearance of a "cast" Chinese copy vs a "struck" manufactured US cent. Each generation of Chinese copy coins have specific signatures that help identify them with the newest Chinese "struck" coins being the hardest to identify.

I am still a beginner. I can spot a few fake Lincoln cents but still ponder the authenticity of most ebay key date coins. One thing that I do when looking for a coin is to search ebay for a specific coin/date and sort results by Highest Price and work my way through the listing top to bottom. It would be interesting to know what % of 1909-s-vdb (& other key date) cents on ebay are fakes. I suspect the % is high. Chinese copies are available for all us minted coins....

Yeah, I really find it hard to see it as a fake, too. I guess I have a lot to learn.
I do really appreciate the extensive knowledge people seem to have..but sometimes I wish I could understand a bit better.
I'll keep reading and learning.
