Hi! I am a baby boomer, and have just inherited a huge collection of coins that I am selling on ebay. How can I tell if my 1909 S VDB is real or not? I took it to the local coin dealer, one man said yes, one said no, one said he did not know. This collection has been put away for over 20 years, and I am a little overwhelmed! Betty

Get a RedBook....It'll show what to look for with everything and every coin and the values of each.....
If you can identify the year "1909" and the wording "VDB" and the mintmark of "S"........then ....I would say .....THAT'S WHAT YOU HAVE !
Now, if it's a "fake"......then a "dealer" 'should' be able to spot that too, but maybe not, that's a tough one there.
But, purchasing a " RedBook" is the coin bible, so to speak, so I'd say start with that .......
Oh....&...POST A PICTURE OF IT HERE ON THE FORUM ! THERE ARE MANY KNOWLEDGABLE PEOPLE AND EXPERTS HERE THAT COULD TELL YOU VERY QUICKLY !

Hi Betty..That has to be very frustrating when you get two or three different answers

I would try and post a picture if you could, that would help a bunch.

Welcome to the forum!

Just curious why you'd want to sell something that someone thought well enough about and save for you for over 20 years? Sounds like someone took the time and got some nice heirlooms for you...

Regarding the 09-S VDB, the markers of a authentic coin are pretty subtle, and I'd suggest David Lange's book "The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents". He describes what to look for in an authentic S mintmark and the V.D.B. on the reverse. Somewhere else is a photo which shows the 4 positions of an authentic 09-S mintmark. If memory serves me, there are only 4 obverse dies. Personally, I find it odd that 3 dealers gave you different responses because authenticating a 09-S VDB is so critical from a dealer standpoint.

Betty, can you find a way to post photos or a good quality scan. Look very closely at the 's' it was often taken from another coin but easy to detect under magnification.

If the VDB is perfectly aligned and symmetrical, it's not real...the "B" should be a little misaligned.

What's you're ebay seller name? Also, you might be risking putting up decent coins that will go cheap if the description is wrong or the pictures are bad. That's why we're here to help you before you get ripped.

Another option would be to submit the coin for grading through a well known grading service such as PCGS. I'm sure if it was fake you would find out pretty quick. Also if it is real and you were looking to sell it, having it graded would surely help.
