I just bought this coin. I don't feel 100% certain of the date/type, as I don't normally collect these coins. I paid $10.50, which I think is a good price. Would appreciate feeback.

Looks like a type 1, I'm not an expert though. It seems looking at ebay prices only the better ones tend to sell for good money.

Thanks for feedback. The "1" in "17" looks off. I'll know better when I get it.

The date does look a bit off as if the 1917 could almost be a 1927 but if it were a 1927 they it would have stars under the eagle. Same if it were type 11 1917 LSQ. So it really has to be a 1917 type 1 which I think is in almost good condition since the date is so weak. Of course, all the LSQ's before 1925 tend to have week dates. I think the grade "good" is not the same for pre 1925 LSQ's than for those after 1924. I have a 1923-S LSQ in EF condition and the date is not that bold. I think if you took that coin to the LCS for sale you would probably get ten dollars. It is just so worn, smooth and flat that is almost a place holder type coin. I think you got it for ten dollars is because no collectors wanted it. If you buy more LSQ's try to get them with a bold date.

The date looks more like 1977 but we all know that's impossible .

The 1 is probably smudged and damaged.

Right, 1917 Type 1 with some damage to the second "1". No other possibilities.

Dave you are just bragging ha, ha. That's a nice coin! You don't see many with dates like that. Yes, start saving for the 1916. Get one with a bold date or just don't get one IMO. If you get a 1916 in Fine condition with a strong date you are getting a deal. There are just so many before 1925 that I see rated VF or even EF with weak dates. Even graded coins the dates often look weak. I might try and get a 1916 in EF condition because it is not that much more expensive than one in VF, but both are about $9000. You could spend that much on a 1889CC Morgan with mintage of 300,000 against just 52,000 1916 LSQ's with nobody knowing how many actually survive today.

If I was showing off I would have posted this one. There is a super nice 1916 MS63 FH at Heritage right now that is getting auctioned on the 1st. https://coins.ha.com/itm/1916-25c-m...otPosition=1 It's at around 18K right now, but there are not too many better out there. That is if you have the money to spare. I still kick myself about once a week for passing on a MS62 for $10,000. That was a strong asking price when I was offered it and I thought it would come back to me. A smarter buyer than me jumped on the deal. Live and learn I guess.

Dave
You notice how the date on the 1916 looks stronger at the bottom and sort of fades at the top? This is so typical of so many of the LSQ's minted before 1925. How do you rate your 1916?

That one is in a PCGS VG10 slab, I think it's an honest grade. The date is almost 60% legible with the naked eye, but under magnification you can see the date completely. I'm sure if it was sent in multiple times you could pull a VG12 out of it though. The price was right and I had the money so I bought it. I've seen dateless 1916's pull over $1000 so having a somewhat legible date was what I wanted. That is until I win the lottery and can splurge on a MS one.
The foot and the top half of the date are definitely the first wear spots. It's a fun (expensive) set to put together, but find solid dates at a reasonable price can be a real pain.
