It's a small 8. See cross on top of crown.
The large 8 has a bow tie on top.

Supposing that the cross or bow tie is worn, is there something other that one can tell?

I have a couple of these and I always have problems telling one from the other.

This is from the Charlton Catalogue showing the two 8's.
Notice the difference in the inside open areas.

Thanks JimmyD, I've seen that in my catalogue too but, if the dates are worn I have trouble with that too..

Maybe I just need new glasses.
