Coin budget? What coin budget? This 1866 w/Rays Shield nickel is in a PCGS holder. What do you think the grade was? Member ANA - EAC - TNA - SSDC - CCT #890 "Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossible before they were done." -- Louis D. Brandeis

I'd go with XF at best.
Yes, that opinion is based on softness in many of the devices. Possibly a weak strike instead of wear. But why not look for a coin that's better struck.

It may be weakly struck...AU55. Very nice for type!

Quote: But why not look for a coin that's better struck. I've already got an AU53 1867 No Rays & a PR64 1870, so this was less of a "one and only" and more of a "just for fun" purchase.

Only the smallest hint of rub, so AU-58. Rather even strike for this date. Lovely tone. Nice across the board.

This is a tough one. Hard to tell the difference between a weak strike and wear. I'd love to say AU-55 or MS-62 but will go with AU-55. Nice color!

Glad to see that PCGS was a bit conservative with this one. A couple of its soon-to-be-neighbors
