BANGOR, Maine - Prosecutors say a Maine man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for selling counterfeit versions of century-old U.S. dollar coins.

U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty says 32-year-old Mwashuma Sithole, of Waterville, started ordering counterfeit Morgan dollar coins in May 2014. Morgan dollars were minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921.

Delahanty says Sithole ordered coins that were offered as counterfeits and made in China. The prosecutor says Sithole sold and pawned about $12,000 worth of counterfeit Morgan dollars in Maine.

The sentence may be a bit on the light side for my tastes but I'm at least happy the police took down one more con man trying to damage our hobby. May there be many more arrests like this in the future.

Rest in Peace

Wow that name. He must have been really teased at school.

I agree with the rest, however (though I wouldn't quite say that the sentence is too light, because I don't really get the point of long prison sentences in general).

For $12,000 dollars, I think that is a fair deal. He should thank his lucky stars the Feds did not throw the book at him. The Feds probably determined that he did not run a big enough operation to warrant a much harsher sentence.

I'm having a Peter Griffin moment with that name, too.

Pawn shops too. Always amazes me that they don't have someone available that knows coins.
