Any Idea what happened here?
Looks like glue or something was poured on it.
Asking $999.00 as an error coin.
Would like some opinions before I report it
in the counterfeit thread as an "Altered Coin"

Also just listed this "Rippled Error" penny for $899.00
Looks acid etched to me.

Altered coin.

I've dealt with this seller, things worked out in the end, but meanwhile.......caveat emptor.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Highly unlikely it's genuine error. Only option would be a defaced die extremely unlikely.

looks like a bunch of crap welded to it IMO

I am the owner of this coin. It has not been altered and not photoshopped either. It is legit and I am currently looking to get it authenticated.

What makes you so sure of your conclusion?

There is nothing on the 1987 dies, or even if there was a die cap, to produce what we are seeing here. If you knew how coins were struck, you'd also know just how the dies transfer their designs to the planchet.

You'll spend at least $25 (CCCS) and up to $80 ( PCGS OR NGC) just for the submission fee, and it is tossing away good money, because whatever happened to your 1987 loon dollar - it did not happen at the mint.
