Hey everybody,

I'm pretty good when it comes to identifying ancient coins, and I have spent a fair amount of time trying to identify this one, but I just can't seem to find anything.

Does anyone know what this is? I'm leaning towards Roman due to the portrait on the obverse and the lettering on the obverse, but I'm really not sure.

The planchet of the coin is very thin, which is causing me to have some doubts about its authenticity in the first place.

Any information at all about this coin would be appreciated.

Antoninianus of emperor Probus, reverse is Sol riding a quadriga. It's pretty common but there are a lot of varieties.

Someone cleaned the bejeezus out of your coin; Probably electrolysis followed by acid bath or polishing. It's worth a dollar or less in this shape, and almost certainly genuine.

Thanks guys, picked it up in a dealers junk bin for the novelty so I'm pretty surprised I ended up scoring a genuine Roman coin even though it's value is nominal

But even with the state it is in we can attribute it further.

Obv:- IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate, bust left in imperial mantle, holding scepter surmounted by eagle
Rev:- SOLI INVICTO, Sol in spread quadriga holding whip
Minted in Cyzicus

There is a CM in centre field and beneath that would be XXI with some other letter. This letter would be the workshop number.

The style is consistent with Emission 3 or 4 and thus we can date the coins to somewhere around A.D. 280 - 281

All this makes it attributable as RIC 911 Bust type H.

I have many of the type.
