There have been sets of the old coins with 2008 on them, a way of making money by The Royal Mint. There is also the chance that before the new coins were legal (in february) or officially announced (two weeks ago) they needed more coins in circulation. It could just be someone who got a set and decided to break it up, though I would be suprised.

I would not have thought we Brits would ever need more of that copper-coated steel core stuff in our pockets - yuck!... If you found one with the "ich dien" logo on the reverse instead of the new jigsaw-puzzle design then I would have thought it would be from a presentation pack but why someone decided to spend it is a mystery....

I get emails from the Perth Mint and the new UK coins are featured this month. So it appears that two different sets will be issued for 2008- one with the new Royal Shield designs and one with old Emblems of Britain. This is the first I heard of it but I find the new designs juxtaposed with the old to be quite fascinating and I think I will have to pick up one of each set. I am not much of a darksider but this will be my first big plunge

Worse than that, they have issued a 1p-1 pound coin set for the old coins that goes with the new coins, and a 1p-2 pound coin set like they normally do for the old coins, but not one, so far, for the new coins!

Guess that for the £2 coins they will focus on commemorative issues. This year it's the 100th anniversary of the 1908 London Olympics; next year that would be Charles Darwin (born 200 years ago) and Robert Burns (born 250 years ago) ...

Just to respond to the person who found a 2008 2p coin with the old design, I found a 5p 2008 with the old design the other day, seems these coins are being circulated!

I have noticed the same thing! I thought we were having a recoinage here!?
They are not the ones coming out of presentation packs they will be a last farewell production that I thought we were not going to have this year... orrr...perhaps they realised just how crap the new designs are and decided to stick with the old ones!
hahah...

I have just come across my first of the new coins in change. It's a 2p but the reverse is rotated about 22 degrees. Can anyone tell me if the ones they have come across so far are the same. Or if anyone has a set, are they all straight up and down in those? Thanks, Lee

I like them individually, but as a set they are outstanding.

Looks like a fine design to me, even if it is a continued "thumbing of the nose" at the European Union and the euro. Certainly is different from anything else in the world.
Several years ago I bought a '94 proof set from a somewhat itinerant fellow who claimed to pull stuff from dumpsters - computer parts, etc. - or received them as compensation for painting work. Paid $8 for it after I examined it and found a £10 note enclosed in the folder. Anyway, it's an attractive design, too, something I've come to expect from the UK.

Yes, interesting designs, but "as a whole" and the individual pieces. Bought a BU set when it was first issued. Two minor points - the 2p coin is still too big in my opinion (but who knows, maybe the British plan to do away with the two "copper" coins soon), and the 20p piece with the lion's butt would have deserved a better part of the CoA, hehe. Basically a good combination of traditional and modern elements though. As for the EU, umm, what does Britain have to do with the euro? Of course they issue pound and pence coins, and it is nice to see a design change.
By the way, it seems that the UK will issue a second £2 coin (circulating commem) this year. In addition to the London 1908 Olympics Anniversary piece, there will also be a "Beijing-London" coin ...

I bought both the new and old BU sets.
So far for the 2008 coins found in circulation, I have only found both the new and old design 1 pence, new design 2 pence, and new design 5 pence.
Will need to get back to you about any of mine are rotated or now.

My wife seems to think that the backs are not straight up and down.
Can we ask a silly question.....how would you judge the it is rotated 22% and to which direction do you think yours is rotated?
