O.K. I am going through BOXES of my grandfathers coins as he has passed away. I am trying to look them all up and see the value before I put them in display cases for my office. I can ID many of them like the Morgan silver dollars CC not O and all thet. I CAN'T TELL WHAT THIS ONE IS. I found what looks like a 1878 dime, however, when flipped over is is a horseshoe with a B inside of it and what looks like a gothic "T" inside of that. It doesn't say anything on the back. Does anyone know what this is? I doubt it's worth anything, but I have searched yahoo and google and NOTHING. Thanks Justin |

The horse shoe and the B make me think of casinos.
B for Binions, the horse shoe for Horseshoe Casinos, or for luck. The seated liberty image has been used on alot of tokens and fantasy coins...
I don't know any of this for sure!
This is just what came to mind with your description.
Jack Binion's Horseshoe Casino... Token with seated liberty.
Just a guess!

Oh yeah, the "T" could be for "Tunica", as in the Tunica Mississippi Horseshoe Casino...
It's a very longshot though...

 I believe what you have is known as a love token. You start with a genuine coin and then one side, usually the reverse so the date is preserved, is removed or lathed off. Once it is smooth, it is engraved with initials or a design. Sometimes it will have a hole. The name "love token" comes from the fact that these were usually given to a wife or girlfriend to be worn on a necklace or a bracelet, hence the hole. Others were carried as a pocket piece. |

hmm, it looks stamped, as in at time of production. I wish I had a macro lens on my camera to get a good picture. I was thinking it was a casino token from some things I read online, but I wasn't sure.

another coin.. it has, on the face a figure (lady Liberty?) as on a 3 cent nickle... but it just says UNION at the top center with stars around the edge(13 stars) and on the back it just says "THE UNION" surrounded my a wreath... any ideas? if it wasn't for the finding of the double stamped 1955 lincoln I would have stopped going throughthese an hour ago...

and another... a mistrike 1868(?) nickle. Between all the stars there is a line almost looking smeared towards the 5 and the circle of stars is really offset wtih a line stamped about 1/8th of an inch from the right side. is it VERY worn...

For the 1868, does it look something like this?  There's a lot of varieties for the Shield nickel series. It would really help if you had photos to help identify it. I don't understand, is the design off or the actual coin "off center"? Is it possible if you could take a photo/scan it or maybe even draw it in paint?

The design is off center... the pattern looks just like that but about 1/4 off center... there are actually some nice coins just thrown in this box. a VF 1798 large cent and a nice set of 1820's large cents...
