In 1982, the mint made 7 different varieties of the business strike Lincoln cent and one Proof.

Among the 7 was a 1982 small date Copper, which is what you have found.

This page: http://www.lincolncentsonline.com/1...20Cents.html
tells more about the 1982 cents.

The Denver mint coins with a D mint mark were not made in the Copper alloy with a small date.

If you find a 1982-D small date Copper cent, then you have something very rare, as only one has been found so far.

Nice find, I don't find very many myself - tons of the large date but only about 20 of small dates.

I'm lucky if I can find anything that's not a D mintmark!

I'll take the copper over zinc any day of the week.

Edit: Does anyone know the mintages of the 1982 copper large date vs. small date (or even large date vs. small date in general)? PCGS CoinFacts shows the same number for both so I assume it's an aggregate.

What a tumultuous year for Lincoln!

Wait until you get started on the 2009 Lincoln cents, there are 20 different ones to collect for that year, and some of them are Copper too!

Not to mention the more than 100 known doubled dies!

I almost don't want to click that link for fear of my brain shutting down entirely.

I mentioned in another topic how all of the things to look for made me want to go out and get some rolls but, I may have to reconsider. I mean, I have to eat at some point!

On the 2009, do the coppers weigh the same as the other coppers. And what is the weight of the satin finish and the zinc coins? Does anyone know

There are two weights (excluding steel cents and rare aluminum experimental cents):

3.11g = copper cent (bronze/brass depending on what you call it - 95% copper)
2.5g = copper-plated zinc (I believe 97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper in plate form, not alloy)

The coppers have changed in composition over the years but should be around 3.1g.

Maybe this helps?
