Hi all,
I'm new to this sub-forum. I generally hang out in the classic coin section. I posted this question on another's post but I probably should have started a new thread.

My nephews are getting into coin collecting so I give them my pocket change to sort through.

Does anyone have a cheat sheet of modern rare coins by date? Preferably dates with the highest probability of finding rarities?

Thanks guys!

Hi Mike,

Yes, I actually saw your note on the other post and have been searching through my archives for the info. I know we have helped out others like yourself with lists last year and I am looking to find them for you so I can just put a link to the other posts in for you. Hopefully later today I will have them for you.

Hey MikeF, I think a big part of the cheat sheet idea comes down to how much your nephews want to pore through details. I have personally made cheat sheets for myself so I don't go nuts looking for every possibilty on every single coin I come across. What kinds of things are they interested in? Some stuff is rare but not necessarily highly sought after. Would they only be interested in especially visible stuff? Only things that would be valuable? Anyhow, for what it's worth, you're welcome to PM me and I can send you what I use, though I do occasionally change it if I get tired of looking for something or hear about something I'd missed before.

Thanks a bunch! That link was very helpful. This list composed by Pete is really helpful. http://goccf.com/t/236716#236716

I think the best practice would be to separate the coins by date that have the highest likelihood of finding rare coins. On a side note, they haven't had any luck with quarters and dimes. I think the chances of finding anything pre-64 are nearly impossible with those issues. They have had better luck with pennies, plucking out several wheat pennies some in au/ms condition.

Anything rare and worth more than face value. They are 6 and 8 years old. Every time they find something unusual the first thing they do is ask me how much its worth. They pulled out this au/ms Wheat penny over the weekend and I nearly fell out of my chair. They have good eyes.

Mike, I've made a layout around the edges of my work area out of 1"x1 1\2" lines on paper with date/mm in each for those I set aside for that second look. That way, if its say 84P "doubled ear", I pull up a pix as example to compare to, same w/ RPM,DDO,DDR's pulling up coppercoins index page. Works great for me. I add new ones, remove ones I give up on...
