So I found this half dollar while coin roll hunting. I don't much about error coins so looking for a little help. As you can see the ear is "mushed". Also the RTY is weak or missing parts of the letters. The second 9 in the year is also completely missing it's tail. The second t in trust is missing and the s is flat. On the backside only the word dollar is weak on the last three letters. Is this a grease strike or some other form of error? How do you recognize a grease strike. Is this coin worth saving and/or grading? The coin seems very clean.
Thank you,
Finn

Sorry about that. Here is the other side. The other side looks OK other than the LAR in the word dollar. I would think that just getting struck with something would deform both sides. The edge is completely normal. No nicks or flattening. It has very little wear on the edge to begin with. That is what originally caught my attention (as I was coin roll hunting...for silver). Thought it was in very good shape to be the year it is...
Thanks,
Finn

Looks like a partial Grease Fill in the deeper areas of the die preventing the full bust image to be created. Sometimes partial devices are also affected. But not enough to make it a premium coin. They do get worse than your example:

In the 80-99% range is where interest comes in. Less than that is common to find.

Thank you very much for the info. Is a keeper for me though as it is the first greade strike I have found.
Thank you,
Finn

If you get a chance you might want to verify the weight. Half dollars punched out of quarter or maybe SBA or maybe rolled thin stock are floating out there. Thanks, Doug.
