I bought a small little lot of 10 Walking Liberty halves.

And I come up to this 1945 and it looks to me like it's the 1945 without the designer's initials. There are some lines in the area, and I can't imagine that area gets a lot of wear.

Do this look like the real thing?

Thanks

Yup, that's the real enchilada! Nice find.

It was a result of over-polishing the die (recessed parts on the coin are high parts on the die), so under high magnification you can see some remnants. I've been looking for one for quite awhile.

Nice find! I got one late last year from the melt bag. Now keep your eyes peeled for the 44-D Hand Carved Initials ! There are also other dates without initials, not sure if any are listed yet.

Is there a central location for locating the approximate value of these types of coins? Reference missing initials from die polishing etc. The reason I ask is I don't have a clue what that would be worth or the Kennedy half with designer initials missing.

The cherrypicker's guide, google and coincommunity.com are what I use.
I'm sure there are other references.

Gormang,

I recently purchased a nice choice BU 1945P. I bought it online because the photo of the half looked like there was no "AW", paid $27. When I received the Walker, there was definitely no monogram. My coin has a few light lines where the monogram should be, it looks very much like your photos.

I would post photos of the half if someone could tell me the best way to get good close-up scans or photos.

I use a little Pentax digital I bought about 2 years ago. It's a 5 megapixel but has a built in function for closeup shots that works real good. With the zoom it can close up to just a numeral on a date. For lighting I use either a $10 halogen light I got from Target or my Ott-Lite. This is a brand of hobby\crafting light that can be had for $50-$300 depending on model. It is absolutely great for studying coins. Sometimes I use a combination of both. Depends on the coin. It takes some practice to get really good pics. I built a photo jig out of some old wood, copper tubing (flexible) and cheap clamps and what-not to hold the camera for volume work or just a steady hand hold for one-offs. Also for working with coins I found velvet remnants glued to the tag board that is the back of legal pads to be handy and you can make a bunch cheap. So if I have several things going on with loose coins I can just stack them up and move them out of the way and the stuff doesn't slide around unless you put it at a pretty high angle.

Flanders, nice grab.

I use a flatbed scanner for my pics.

I just haven't been very successful with a camera, yet.

Gormang,

I finally was able to photograph my 1945 WLH with no "AW". Photos are just OK but clearly show no monogram.

Gormang,

I'd be willing to purchase your 1945 no "AW" half. I like to study coins like this....if you're interested let me know.
