1748 Reale, Counterfeit/Fake Or Real?

It could very easily be a tourist-store knockoff, but given that my family is comprised of Medieval Spain historians who have been to the country countless times, I'm curious to see if this is the real deal. Either way, its still probably still going to be used as a glorified paperweight. My postal scale puts it at around 25-26g I've done my best to take pictures, but they've had to be cropped per guidelines. Report this Post to the Staff

A seam runs around the middle of the edge and much detail is fuzzy that should be sharp. It does not look like .917 fine silver. Some early counterfeits can be worth as much as regal coins, but probably not in this case. How did you come by this coin and can it be returned to the seller? Report this Post to the Staff

Again, the only reason I even thought to posit the question is because I come from a family of medieval Spanish historians. The coin could've easily come from a souvenir stand selling cast-copies, but it could've also been obtained under more historical means. Do you reckon its worth taking to a coin person to check the metallurgical content, or is the seam enough to determine it a fake? Again, as I said, I was just planning on using it as a fancy paperweight anyways. I was just mostly curious. Report this Post to the Staff
Pistareen Valued Member United States 309 Posts	Posted 06/12/2017 3:43 pm By all means show this coin around and get more opinions. In my mind it is a souvenir stand copy. For instance the pomegranate of Segovia is blurred out of the coat of arms on the shield. This is akin to finding an American flag missing some stars. It could be that you found an old flag from before some States were admitted to the Union, or it could be a poor facsimile made overseas where such mistakes could happen. But it is easy to say such a flag was not a mistake an American firm would miss. Good luck and may you use this coin to start interesting conversations! It has that value.
