Hi all, Hope you can help. I have searched the web extensively to try and identify this coin. From the inscription I assume it to be Islamic in origin and judging the quality of the coin, would consider it "old". However, I am not even sure its a coin - and may be a token of some sort? One more thing, you will recognize the pictures (in the link I provided above) better if you rotate them 90° clockwise.

I agree with BigSilver on the identification of this piece, though the pictures NGC provides on their price guide for KM#108.2 looks even closer to the example in questions than the pictures provided by Numista. The variations, according to NGC, run from KM#108.1 to KM#108.6, so Numista's might actually be of one of the other types (with the main difference I am seeing being on the top left of Numista's second picture). And the NGC link can be found here. This is not a cheap coin, so it would sure be great if someone could authenticate this. And if it helps, the date looks to be 984 in the Islamic calendar.   |

Sel_691 asks about the coins weight - its 10.75g. I presume that this will be around 93% gold?

Hi again, One question I forgot to ask is - How can one check that this coin is not a recent copy or forgery? I have no knowledge of its provenance. It was included in my late father's collection of coins, which I think he inherited form his father and so on! Regards, G |

The weight is correct for that coin that I linked above. To prove its authenticity, you could submit to a TPG such as PCGS, NGC or ANACS. That will cost money. You coukd have the comppsition verified by XRF and that would be a good start. |
