Hello all,

Have the following coin of Faustina.

Weight = 9.7 grams; diameter about 24 mm.

Would greatly appreciate it if the experts could provide me with more details about this coin and also if they feel it is genuine or not.

Obviously if genuine then a retail price would also be welcome.

Thanks in advance for all assistance I'm sure to receive.

Regards,

Mike.

The flan is VERY round unlike any ancient coin.
The design style is no way consistent with any known genuine contemporary coin of Faustina coin that I have ever seen.

Fake or copy, most probably a tourist copy, unfortunately.

@mikehy, sorry but I agree with the others. If you are interested in seeing what some real coins of Faustina look like, here is a good thread with multiple examples. I think that the differences will jump out at you.

According to the British Museum Catalog (Coins of the Roman Empire in the British Museum), all the bronze coins for Fautsina I were minted at Rome. Therefore the style of your coin is an immediate tipoff. Crudeness in the portrait, ditto the lettering which is misshapen and ill placed, crude beading surrounding the central design. The central figure on the reverse is a bizarre fantasy, as is the inscription.

In fairness, if I were in the business of making tourist pieces, I would deliberately design something that could not be mistaken for the real thing. Add this one to your collection of modern fantasy pieces.
