For being a "first day of issue", George seems a bit worse for wear. I'd break this out of the slab and spend it, if it were worth my time! What exactly does "brilliant uncirculated...first day of issue" mean for such a banged-up coin? Report this Post to the Staff

There are many good portraits made in George Washington's lifetime to draw inspiration from: George Washington by Jean-Antoine Houdon. biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 05/01/2008 10:40 am I have noticed that the grading standards are a bit lax for the new Pres dollars. That might have something to do with the fact that they are handled twice as much as any other coin in the minting process due to the secondary edge lettering process and therefore tend to be more banged up. I am not sure how NGCs adjective grading standards convert to Sheldon grades, but I was taught many years ago that UNC is 60-62, BU is 63-65, and Gem BU is 66+. Adhering to that, I could see this coin barely making BU as a MS63. Report this Post to the Staff
