NGC sent this to me free; tell me what you think. All in fun of course!
For being a "first day of issue", George seems a bit worse for wear.

I'd break this out of the slab and spend it, if it were worth my time!

Washington-$1

What exactly does "brilliant uncirculated...first day of issue" mean for such a banged-up coin?

I wouldn't call that BU either--and you basically see what I see.
Personally, I consider this a reject from a mint roll or bag--if that's where it originated.

Maybe they mean it was brilliant uncirculated ON the first day of issue?

It's certainly not now.

Patrick

Then on the second day, it was hit by a cement truck (sorry)

On another note, I have an issue with this portrait because I don't find it an "accurate" (or flattering) likeness of our first President, based on contemporary portraits I've seen. There are many good portraits made in George Washington's lifetime to draw inspiration from:

George Washington by Jean-Antoine Houdon.

How many did they make on the first day? Looks like that coin was hit by all of them.

I have noticed that the grading standards are a bit lax for the new Pres dollars. That might have something to do with the fact that they are handled twice as much as any other coin in the minting process due to the secondary edge lettering process and therefore tend to be more banged up. I am not sure how NGCs adjective grading standards convert to Sheldon grades, but I was taught many years ago that UNC is 60-62, BU is 63-65, and Gem BU is 66+. Adhering to that, I could see this coin barely making BU as a MS63.
