I'm completing my small cents collection and have been reviewing the PCGS Pop report for possible targets to fill the holes. I noticed in 1957, there are 121 cents graded MS-66 Red!

1957 red cents in MS-66 don't seem to be particularly common based on my search efforts. Does anybody have an ICCS population number for the same grade? Any explanations for the inflated PCGS total. The figures for 1955, 1956, and 1959 seem much more in line with what I have found in my searching. 1958 seems somewhat high with 58 in MS-66, but is not nearly as shocking.

Thanks in advance.

There's also over 500 as a 65. There's lots of possible explanations, the first would be it seems to have been submitted the most from the pop reports which could have been from everyone or someone coming across some nice rolls ect. Since 66+ is the top pop and a pop 1 a couple of the 66 may have been resubmits from someone who thought they should be 67s ect.

There are probably many thousands more laying around in hoarded and unsearched rolls, that have not been submitted. When buying EIIR high end coins especially cents to 25 cents tread very carefully . There is a rather minuscule market for Red young head Elizabeth Cents.
Ask dealers what they will pay for rolls of BU pennies from 1953 to 1964 and watch mouths mumble and eyes glaze over as you get a not too interested response.

Thanks for the replies.

johnnysprawl, how does the 1957 population compare to the figures for '55, '56, '58 and '59?

Pacificcoin, I agree with you in part. In my experience, Elizabeth rolls and grades up to MS-65 are available everywhere, and the prices reflect it. Where I disagree is that I believe there is scarcity in the extreme grades (MS-66 and up). There has been some real competition for cents in those grades (see the recent 1955 ICCS MS-66 sold on eBay). I've been building my collection in those extreme grades, and early '50s EIIR cents in MS-66 are few and far between. I have not encountered a 1957 in MS-66 (either PCGS or ICCS), which is the reason for my surprise at the PCGS pop. I also find it curious that 121 are graded MS-66, and not a single coin made MS-67. Given the fact that 1957 isn't known to be a key date, it would seem unusual to see so many submissions for that particular coin. If there were in fact an abundance, it's unusual that none have shown up online recently, either on eBay or with major Canadian dealers.
