Hello guys! I am new member of the forum but I collect coins for many years. A few days ago I found in my collection a really weird coin. I cannot read the letters on it but there is carved head on it. Furthermore, it is big and looks like really old. Do you have any idea about the origin and value of the coin? Thanks a lot!
It looks to me like it is a French medal that was heavily handled. Maybe carried as a good luck or sentimental piece. Maybe one of King Louis XIV, but that's just a guess.
It is a commemorative medal in my estimation. French, yes. Possibly a memento mori or death commemorative, since wedding commemoratives tended to feature dual busts.
The reverse is badly worn but you can see "NE A ...EN...VIII" and "...EN...LVII" which means the birth year ended with an 8 and the death year ended with a 57.
