I am planning on starting a new set of Kennedy half dollars. I admit I don't much about the series. Any advice on the pitfalls? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks, afernbaugh

I would focus on the later dates such as 2000 to present since those have low mintages and weren't released for circulation. I think there is some real potential there.

I am also thinking about starting a series of these. What are the key dates to look for?
I found a bunch of 2001's in a roll the other day, should I keep them?

You should look out for the 1970 and 1987 halves because they were not released into circulation. The 2001 and nothing too special. Keep any 2002, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, and S mint coins.

If you're happy with XF and AU quality, run - don't walk! to your local bank. Buy a bunch of rolls of Kennedy halves. You can fill a lot of holes if you're happy with XF+ quality. What you can't find in rolls, are pretty cheap to complete - and here I'm talking about the regular business strike issues. The 1970-D and all the "S" proofs are a bit pricey. And I'm not talking about the silver ones. Basically it's a HUGE, HUGE set that weighs several tons when complete. As I said earlier, you can cut down the cost a lot buy searching rolls if you're happy with less than MS-xxxxx coins.

Thanks for the input all of you! I am drinking it all in at this point. It seems that there are several "SMS" coins. Since I am a "Dansco type guy" I was wondering which ones are or are NOT in the Dansco 8100 series album; my idea of a complete set seems to always center on their definition. Any advice? Thanks and kind offers,
Alan

Yes you have 1st SMS are 1965 1966 1967 2nd is the Mattie Finish 1998-S that in the botanical Garden set 3rd start at 2005 Satin Finish they are only in the yearly mint set so far there 3 pair of P&D 2005,2006,2007 and most likely 2008 you can only get in the yearly mint sets from the US Mint.
